Glorious History 1888, W. W. Mr. Gibbs jumped on the bandwagon and founded Electric StorageBattery, a company that made independent energy storage a reality and helped fuel the American Electric lighting industry. In 1890, the company installed the first practical battery in Philadelphia and used 13,000 individual batteries to power the streetcar, becoming the first self-powered road vehicle. In 1898, the company's products were used in the first American submarine.
