Glorious History 1888, W. W. Mr. Gibbs jumped on the bandwagon and founded Electric StorageBattery, a company that made independent energy storage a reality and helped fuel the American Electric lighting industry. In 1890, the company installed the first practical battery in Philadelphia and used 13,000 individual batteries to power the streetcar, becoming the first self-powered road vehicle. In 1898, the company's products were used in the first American submarine. Since then, the company's batteries have been used in diesel locomotive, trams, buses, ships, and the first automatic switch for American rail transit, signal system. In 1900, the company through technological innovation, in the continuous increase in storage battery capacity while reducing the weight of the battery, and eventually created the Exide brand. Exeter continues to innovate, developing battery products for use in areas such as telephone service and wireless telegraphy transmission, and working with Cadillac to develop the world's first battery-powered vehicle.
